Blackheath

In April 2002, part of the eastbound carriageway of the A2 Blackheath Hill in South East London collapsed. On investigation it was discovered that the road is built close to chalk quarry workings dating back to the 1600’s.

Hickton's Clerk of Works Ian Gowers inspected the complex investigations and ground monitoring. He also oversaw the stabilisation and grouting of a 200 metre length of road. This involved drilling and grouting holes up to 20 metres deep, the reinstatement of underground services and a further 300 metres of road construction.
